lighting assignment - afternoon light and morning light
I love this assignment and will continue to explore the light in my house further. I discovered some lovely mid to late afternoon light in out living room that added a whole new mood in my photos that I hadn't tapped before when I've shot in the house.
One thing I realized is that I don't seem to have an eye for black and white photography. I'll need to explore black and white photography a little more to figure out what works well for me since almost always I like the color photo better unless there are obvious color clashes.
Addendum:
I added two photos from the morning while my daughter was eating breakfast. This time, I think, I do like the black and white shot better since my daughter stands out from the picture more. Skin tones are hard to get right!

I'm so happy to hear that you are enjoying the first assignment! Your two images are lovely! The one in colour has such beautiful rich tones that really make the photo pop and I like your b/w, how did you convert it? If you are using a program like Lightroom or Photoshop, even Photoshop Elements, you can always tryout some b/w presets or actions to see how those work for you. Often when I do a straight b/w conversion I will make tweaks to my exposure, blacks, fill light and tone curve, to create just the right b/w. So depending on what program you are using to convert your images there should be options for adjustments which you could always tryout and have fun exploring. I guarantee you will fall in love with your b/w photos in no time!! :)
Thanks, Carly!
I converted the photos using the presets in Lightroom. The only bw preset that I seem to like so far is called creamtone because the others seem a little harsh. I've played with the exposure, fill light, and blacks settings a little bit but I need to experiment with the settings more and learn what those are all about. One thing I've learned that I do like about black and white photography is that I don't have to worry about making the skin tones too orange or blue when I edit!
I also added a photo (color and black & white) with morning light that are paired with the afternoon pictures. I've learned that I get nice, happy light before 11am on one side of the house but after that the light somehow isn't quite as interesting. Anyway, I'm going to have more fun with the natural light in our house.

I really like both photos. The chevron dress works great in black and white, but the color photo has so much energy. Great shot!
Thanks so much! I think I got lucky that the colors of her dress paired well with the room colors. Usually, she likes to wear bright pink in which case maybe the black and white would have worked better! :)
