Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans
When I was a freshman in high school, I decided what I wanted to be in life. During my freshman year of college, everything was on track. I had my dream summer job all lined up before any of my classmates. I was in no way qualified for the job but I wowed them in the interview and they were going to take a chance on me. I was going to be one of three leaders for a family camp located near Lake Tahoe. It was like the camp in the movie Dirty Dancing in that families would come up for the summer and I would be responsible for all the activities, meals and safety of the guests. I was working on getting my class B driver’s license because I needed to be able to drive the camp bus. I was learning about river rafting so I could lead the weekly rafting trips. I was 18 years old and all my plans and dreams were coming true. Then someone offered me a cookie and my life changed forever.
I was hanging out on campus one day after class when Andi, one of my college friends, asked if I was going to the Disneyland College Program presentation that day. I had not planned on it. I liked Disney but I was not the super fan I am today. I had been to Disneyland once when I was 10 and Walt Disney World once when I was 12. I had no desire to work there and besides I already had my dream summer job lined up. Then Andi mentioned there would be cookies at the presentation. I thought what the heck, I can listen to the presentation in order to get some cookies.
By the end of the presentation I was sold. I knew I had to get accepted to the College Program. I must have done a good job in this interview as well because I was the only person accepted from CSU Sacramento that year.
I was so lucky to have this experience. I grew up there, took my first steps into adulthood, fell in love for the first time. I think it is where I really became me. It created my passion for Disney. It lead me to apply to the Walt Disney World College Program where I met and fell in love with Julio. If it wasn’t for Disneyland, I don’t think I would have traveled as much, moved across the country or sought out other grand adventures. My life so far can all be traced back to that cookie. I love thinking back to that day and how a seemingly small decision changed the course of my life.
One of my favorite Walt Disney quotes is, “It all started with a Mouse.” I like to say my life started with a cookie then came the Mouse.
